History Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, (BVGS) is a state selective grammar school with academy status located in Sutton Coldfield. The school was founded in 1527 and is one of Britain's oldest schools. Up until 1969 the school used to have boarders, contrastingly it is now a day school only. In 2004, BVGS became a language college and in 2007 the school was granted Training School status. This means it has its own teacher training programme, enabling teachers to train and qualify with the school. BVGS also has a sixth form college. BVGS has around 1164 pupils currently on its roll, it is renowned locally for its excellent rugby union and hockey teams. This means that they assess students hoping to enter the school in Year 7 and offer places based on the results of this assessment. This clearly sets the standards and admissions policies that the school follows. Boys are selected based on their academic ability and performance in the 11 plus (11+) exam. After taking the 11+, pupils will be awarded a combined score, standardised according to the age of the pupil. In order to qualify for admission, pupils must achieve a minimum 'qualifying score' in the 11+ exam. All candidates that reach the minimum qualifying score are then ranked with priority given to students in the following order: Looked after / previously looked after children who achieve the qualifying score Children who qualify for Pupil Premium (upto a maximum of 38 places) All other students achieving the qualifying score are then ranked based on their performance in the exam. Should any children achieve equal scores in the exam, children living nearer to the school will be given priority. The 11 plus application process for Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School The admissions timetable found here, gives you details on when the registration window opens. During the registration period, you must register your child when they are in year 5 using the online application form which can be found here. As part of the application, you will need to upload a recent photo of your child. This will be used to identify them at the test venue. To enter the school in year 7, a Change of School application form must be completed, you may obtain this by contacting the school by telephone on 0121 250 5400 or via emailing . A Test Registration form and Local Authority Preference form must also be filled in and given to the school. Is there a catchment area for Bishop Vesey's Grammar School? The Structure of Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 11 Plus Exam The 11 plus exam at Bishop Vesey's Grammar School involves two 45 minute papers, separated into sections testing: Numeracy English (writing and comprehension) Verbal reasoning Non-verbal reasoning The majority of questions will be multiple choice and final results will be standardised according to the exact age of your child. This prevents older children in the year group from having an advantage over the slightly younger children born in earlier months.
